Jan Amos Komensky (John Amos Comenius)

Once upon a time, long ago, in the seventeenth century, an inspired teacher and education reformer from Czech Republic, Jan Amos Komensky, known as John Amos Comenius, dreamed of Global Education. Comenius was born in fifteen ninety-two in Moravia and in his early years became a bishop of the Moravian church. Nominated teacher of nations, Comenius is considered the father of modern education. He lived and worked in many different countries in Europe, including Sweden, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Transylvania, the Holy Roman Empire, England, the Netherlands and Royal Hungary. He believed in the holistic concept of education that is, learning, spiritual and emotional growths are all woven together. His educational reform is based on the idea of education according to nature and learning foreign languages through the vernacular using teaching techniques that make the acquisition of knowledge a pleasure rather than a task. He was the first to use pictures in textbooks. He taught that education began in the earliest years of childhood and continued throughout life. He published 154 books, most of them about educational philosophy and religion. He died in Amsterdam in 1670.

La Diada de Sant Jordi  - Saint George's Day is a Catalan holiday held on 23 April. The main event is the exchange of gifts between sweethearts, loved ones and colleagues. Historically, men gave women roses, and women gave men a book to celebrate the occasion—"a rose for love and a book forever." In modern times, the mutual exchange of books is also customary. Roses have been associated with this day since medieval times, but the giving of books is a more recent tradition originating in 1923, when a bookseller started to promote the holiday as a way to commemorate the nearly simultaneous deaths of Miguel Cervantes and William Shakespeare on 23 April 1616.Barcelona is the publishing capital of both Catalan and Spanish languages and the combination of love and literacy was quickly adopted.Catalonia exported its tradition of the book and the rose to the rest of the world. In 1995, the UNESCO adopted 23 April as World Book and Copyright Day.

Easter in Catalonia.

HAPPY EASTER!

We start celebration with Palm Sunday. We go to church with handmade colour palms ( made of flowers, paper, grass and branches) to bless them.

It`s Easter today. Yesterday we blessed in the church basket full of food. Traditionaly we fill the basket with eggs ( pisanki - painted ones) , sausage, bread, salt, horse- radish and add Paschal lamb (Christ is seen as the "Lamb of God.") and decorate it with white lace napkin and branches of boxwood. We went to special very early morning mass called Ressurection Mass. Then we had breakfast with all the family and we started with pieces of blessed Easter eggs and exchanged best wishes. Tomorrow Easter Monday -the most important tradition of this day is Smingus - Dyngus - boys try to drench girls with buckets of water. Nowdays rather a little bit of splash not the whole bucket :-)

Sport Day in Artes

SPORTS DAY in Dr Ferrer school, Artés In the morning, all the pupils walked together carrying the flag of the country they “represented”, like in the Olimpic way. Pupils of different ages were mixed. Then they enjoyed the different sports. They all had a great day.

Shrek`s the Swamp Karaoke Dance Party!

We said goodbye to the Carnival with Shrek`s the Swamp Karaoke Dance Party. All groups had to prepare one song from Shrek`s soundtrack e.g.“I'm a Believer” , "Happy Together", "Who Let the Dogs Out?" . There was a competition and best English,best choreography and the best costume was marked. The winner was class 4b which sang and danced to "YMCA".

PUSTOVANJE in Osnovna šola Gustava Šiliha Laporje

While travelling through Slovenia I had a chance to visit our partner`s school -Osnovna šola Gustava Šiliha - so thank you Margareta and Tina for your warm welcome J Lucky me because on Shrove Tuesday the Egyptian mummies, Romans, Vikings, pirates, gangsters of 1920ties, hippies… arrived to Laporje. It was a great way to learn about history. Lovely costumes were prepared by students and teachers. All the groups performed very well and I could see some amazing talents among pupils and teachers just to name Jack Sparrow and two teachers (?) from the story about 20ties. The jury decided that the winners are pirates. They won a basket full of fruit.

Shrove Monday in Artés

This week we celebrated “Shrove Monday” every day. Yes, every morning pupils came to school wearing or bringing something related to a fairy tale: On Monday there was the Little Red Riding Hood’s Day… Tuesday was The Three Little Pigs’ Day Wednesday was Cinderela’s Day Thursday was The Tiny Tom’s Day And Friday was La Rateta que escombrava l’escaleta’s Day. Pupils had fun every day by seeing how everyone was dressed or what they brought. On Friday, the “dress” was organized by the school about a Catalan traditional tale: “La Rateta que escombrava l’escaleta”… look at the power point…

Welcome to Szkoła Podstawowa nr 11 in Przemyśl !

The film showing the youngest pupils of our school at their work and fun. We are looking for 6 years old pupils eager to start school. In Poland pupils can start school at the age of 6 or 7.Since 2014 all 6 years old will have to start school. The first song is our school`s anthem.

The International Day of Peace and No Violence in Artés.

The International Day of Peace and No Violence was celebrated in our school, Dr Ferrer school in Artés.

All pupils gathered in the playground to make a SIGN with our bodies. We also sang a beautiful song about PEACE: “Heal the World”, by Michael Jackson. All participants had made a “medal” with a drawing related to Peace.

Parents could enjoy the performance, and some of them had tears in their eyes by listening to their children singing…. 

Science lesson in alchemist's workshop

Alchemy can be considered a direct ancestor of modern chemistry. Pupils of classes 5a and 6b and Science teacher Ms Małgorzata Jagustyn  had an interesting lesson of Science in the Alchemist`s workshop. They prepared decorations and costumes and produced the film.This is a part of school activities connected with Comenius Project EUROPE IN OUR MINDS,EUROPE IN OUR LIVES

In Middle Ages in Europe

IN MIDDLE AGES MONKS WROTE BOOKS

Pupils of grade 5a and their Polish teacher Ms Katarzyna Skotnicka learned about the history and art of books in Medieval Times and made a film about it.  Before the invention of printing machines books were handmade and treasured as works of art and as symbols of knowledge. They were written by monks and the monasteries had first libraries. The handwriting was very neat and painstaking so the book creation required hard work and patience. 

AND ARTISTS MADE BEAUTIFUL STAINED GLASS

Art teacher Ms Jolanta Kawalec and pupils of classes 5 a and 5 b studied about medieval cathedrals and beautiful stained glass. They visited our cathedral and then made tissue paper stained glass. 

"Meetings with Art" in Gallery of Contemporary Art in Przemysl

In the BWA Gallery ( Gallery of Contemporary Art ) in Przemyśl students of after school club with their teacher Mrs. Małgorzata Banicka painted medieval castles. The most interesting works will be shown on  a special opening, which is organized annually in June. The workshop was filmed by Mr Jan Wróbel of the BWA Gallery.

GOSIA`S NEW PROJECT

As you might know this year my school has started a new Comenius project " Europe in our lives, Europe in our minds". The partners in the project are Holland ( Groningen), the UK ( Charlton-on-Otmoor) Spain ( Arahal) - coordinating school , Bulgaria ( Burgas), Italy ( Olbia) and Poland ( SP11 Przemyśl). The first activities are connected with Medieval Ages. I will be posting some interesting activities as they go on well with our "Once Upon a Time in Europe" project.

THREE WISE MEN arrived in Artés

THE THREE WISE MEN arrived to Artés on 5th January.
Hundreds of people went to the streets to welcome them.

Children were so HAPPY seeing them.

At night they deliver all the presents to children!

Ana`s school new Comenius project :-)

On November 9, the Basic School of Montemor-o-Novo, Portugal, and together with Germany, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Turkey, Holland and Estonia were held their opening ceremonies of the Comenius Project, "Academy of multiple Intelligences "(AMI). Each country decided to perform the activity at your school. In Montemor-o-Novo decided to make a balloons launch with the colors of the partner countries. It was great, the show expressed by students and the sky full of different colors represented by balloons launched. In the end we held a dance prepared by the physical education teacher, who has conducted trials with students of 4th year classes, but where the whole school community joined the dance.
