Legend from Montemor-o-Novo

The legend of the chests of the castle of Montemor-o-Novo

It is said that the Castellan had a very beautiful daughter, who had many suitors, many claimants who were rich. Her father wanted her to marry a man who had many lands, but she fell in love with a simple soldier. And then, like his father did not want her to marry a soldier, she was forced to flee with him. The father when he learned that his daughter had run away, disowned her and cursed her. But as fond of her daughter, was always hoping to see her back, but her daughter never returned. At the time of death, the father, devoured by remorse for not giving her anything, and hurt by her running away, decided to leave her a dowry. He filled a large chest of gold and let another  full of a curse (plague). When she learned that her father had died , she returned to the Montemor’s  castle with  her husband. So the servants said to her  that her father  was sorry and had left the two chests as inheritance and a sign of regret. They were two huge chests. But she had to chose  the right  chest. One was full of gold and all the goods that the father had left her and the other was full of curse. She was too scared to open either of the chests, because the plague and the curse could destroy Montemor, so she lived poor for the rest of her life.
Thus, it is said that even today, there are within the walls of the Castle of Montemor-o-Novo, buried two large chests. One, full of gold and wealth that shall be enough to satisfy all the land of Portugal. But the other, full of pestilence, which, once opened, vomit hunger, fever and misery that will kill everyone, mercilessly.
No one has dared to touch them!!!
